Where were you born and raised? I was born and raised in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, and relocated to Irvine, California during grade school.

What drew you into the field of law? I felt a profound calling to the field of law after witnessing the struggles of my town's residents and recognizing the need for dedicated legal advocates. I wanted to ensure that individuals facing similar situations in the future would have someone on their side, someone who could navigate the complexities of the legal system and fight tirelessly for justice.

Which clinic in the Loyola Social Justice Law Clinic are you involved with and what sort of work does this clinic do?RISE – Rights in Systems Enforced. The RISE Clinic is dedicated to supporting survivors of violent crime in a multifaceted manner. To break it down, we assist survivors by offering legal defense in court proceedings, which involves tasks such as motion practice, drafting briefs, and making oral arguments.

Under the careful supervision of RISE Clinic faculty, we, as students, learn how to build collaborative relationships with our clients. This is essential not only for their safety but also to connect them with social services and civil legal remedies they might need.

What sets the RISE Clinic apart is that it doesn't stop at individual representation. We are committed to instigating systemic change in law enforcement practices that often re-victimize and dehumanize survivors of violent crime. It's crucial to acknowledge and address the structural inequalities that disproportionately affect people of color, particularly those who are also women, youth, LGBTQ+, disabled, and immigrants, making them both targets of criminal violence and unfair criminalization.

What has this clinic experience meant to you beyond the practical application of the law?

My clinic experience has been an incredibly profound and transformative journey that has enriched my life in ways that extend far beyond the mere practical application of the law. It has been a holistic and deeply personal experience, shaping not only my professional identity but also my values, aspirations, and understanding of the world. It has enriched my life by instilling in me a profound sense of purpose, a commitment to ethical and compassionate practice, and a broader, more empathetic perspective on the world.

What are some lessons you’ve learned in the clinic that you hope to take with you in your legal career post-graduation?

One of the paramount lessons I've gleaned from my clinic experience is the profound significance of empathy in the legal profession. The ability to empathize with clients and understand their unique perspectives, challenges, and emotions is, in my view, one of the most valuable attributes a lawyer can possess.

Would you recommend the clinic experience for other law students? If so, why? Absolutely, I wholeheartedly recommend the clinic experience to other law students. I believe it is a vital and enriching opportunity on multiple fronts. First and foremost, it allows you to provide much-needed legal aid to those in need, which is not only a fulfilling experience but also a fundamental responsibility for any aspiring lawyer.

Furthermore, the clinic experience is invaluable as it provides a unique opportunity to refine and apply the legal skills you've either naturally possessed or acquired during law school. It's not just about gaining further experience; it's about transforming theoretical knowledge into practical expertise.

Moreover, participating in the clinic allows you to elevate and perfect your lawyering skills. It's a dynamic environment where you can enhance your ability to research, strategize, and advocate for clients, all while under the guidance of experienced mentors. This hands-on experience equips you with a level of proficiency that goes beyond what can be learned solely within the classroom, making it an essential component of any aspiring lawyer's education
