On February 24, 2024, Ninveh Mansour (JD 2026), Madeline Prokop (JD 2026), and Sierra Erdem (JD 2026), three of the students of the International Human Rights Center, travelled to Geneva to present to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) a parallel report on Iraq. The report was jointly prepared by the IHRC, Khairat Al Nahraeen Human Organization, and Support Her, Organization for Women’s Rights.
The report focused on a new law that legalized pathways to child marriage, which comes under the purview of the Covenant (Articles 2, 3, 10, 12, and 16). Their presentation highlighted the dangerous practice and effects of child marriage, including the myriad health, financial, and legal effects it has on girls. Their presentation recommended maintaining Iraq's original marriage age, removing Iraq's reservation to article 16 of the Convention, and making education compulsory for girls until age 18.
