Background

Elie Miller is the Supervising Attorney of the Collateral Consequences of Conviction Justice Project (CCCJP) at the Center for Juvenile Law and Policy. CCCJP started as a collaboration between the Mayor of Los Angeles and Loyola Law School. It is a one-semester course that assists formerly incarcerated individuals who are seeking post-conviction relief due to experiencing the dire consequences of a conviction that affect their employment, housing, and family. Prior to joining Loyola Law School in 2017, Miller was a Deputy Public Defender for both the Los Angeles County Public Defender and Alternate Public Defender offices where she worked over 19 years as a trial attorney. She handled misdemeanor and felony cases, including special circumstance homicides. Subsequently she was the Director of Legal Services at Homeboy Industries, Inc., in Los Angeles, a gang rehabilitation program founded by Gregory Boyle, SJ. She also was a supervising attorney for Pepperdine Law School’s Legal Aid Clinic at the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles, teaching students who were providing pro bono legal services to the residents of the Mission and the surrounding Skid Row area. Her legal reentry work continued as a staff attorney in the Legal Department of a New Way of Life Reentry Project in Watts prior to joining LLS. In her past life, she was a Special Education teacher in Pennsylvania.
