In 1993, six Los Angeles area ABA-accredited law schools formed a consortium, the Greater Los Angeles Consortium on Externships (GLACE). In 2005, GLACE welcomed Chapman University School of Law in Orange County as a GLACE member. The primary purpose was to develop joint standards for the field supervision of externs by field supervisors, judicial clerks and research attorneys. That goal was accomplished with the preparation and adoption of the GLACE Supervision Manual for Field Placement Supervisors (see link on this page). The GLACE Field Supervision Manual has received national attention and a version of it has been adopted by many law schools throughout the country with off-campus externship programs.
A secondary and continuing goal adopted by GLACE is to provide our valuable field supervisors with as much information and support as we can to facilitate effective education and mentoring of our students. This website is for you, our field supervisors. It is currently a work in progress, so be patient with us as we continue to add resources and information. We have already posted contact information so you can easily access the faculty and support staff for each of our externship programs. We have a blog (click on the "We Hear You" link) so we can hear your thoughts and answer your questions. We are working on a link to allow you to post your externship positions as they arise on a regular basis.
COMING EVENTS:
Don’t miss our Third Regional Externship Supervision Forum, Hosted by GLACE, on September 25, 2008 at Southwestern Law School from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Our program will offer two MCLE credits (ethics and law office management),and will include a keynote address from the Honorable Candace Beason (Judge of the CA Superior Court in Pasadena), tips on effective supervision and training of “Generation Y” externs, and tips on effective critique of externs’ written work, among other topics. Written materials will be provided. There is no charge for the Forum other than a $6 parking fee at Southwestern. The Forum will close with an informal reception. All GLACE externship faculty members will be present to welcome and speak with you.
