Johnathan Ortiz, Workers’ Rights Clinic

As a student in the Workers’ Rights Clinic, Johnathan Ortiz stood out for his commitment to low-wage and immigrant workers, as well as marginalized communities in Los Angeles. During his time with the legal clinic, he demonstrated not only exceptional legal skills but also an innate ability to connect with clients on a deeply human level. His compassion was evident in every case he handled, as he consistently went above and beyond to ensure that each individual felt heard, respected, and supported. His clients faced issues of wage theft, retaliation, discrimination, misclassification, and harassment — all of them presenting stressful and complex legal challenges that he handled with flexibility and understanding while remaining sensitive to the diverse backgrounds and struggles of his clients.

His commitment to justice and equity was woven into every aspect of his work, making him a true advocate for those who needed it most. Johnathan’s leadership in the clinic left a lasting impact on his professors as well as the vulnerable communities he served, proving his commitment to social justice to be just as strong as his legal skills.

His contributions to the clinic represented the values that the law school exhorts all its students and faculty to embody in their lives and work — and for that we are deeply grateful. Congratulations, Johnathan.
