Graduate Information

Get ready for your commencement celebrations.

Regalia

Starting April 29th, students may pick up regalia from the LLS Bookstore, whether it was preordered online or not.  At this time, there is no need to reserve or add a name to a reserve list. The LLS Bookstore will have enough to accommodate all students and their presenters, if needed.

For your convenience, the LLS Bookstore has partnered with Herff Jones to provide you with all your graduation needs. Order your graduation items for safe and convenient delivery to your home at herff.ly/loyolalaw

Order your regalia no later than Sunday, March 24 by going to herff.ly/loyolalaw to ensure bookstore pick up for LLS's in-person commencement ceremony. Pick up will be available starting April 29th in the Bookstore.

Ship to home orders will ship when placed, but should be ordered no later than Sunday, April 14 to ensure order arrives before the ceremony.

Graduates must wear official regalia assigned to the degree they expect to receive. For candidates for JD, LLM, and JSD, the May 2024 ceremony will feature the debut of gowns incorporating LMU Red, LMU Blue, and a custom hood with accents of purple, the color traditionally associated with the legal academy. Graduates are organized for class photos and other activities, in part, by the regalia they are wearing.

Failure to wear the appropriate regalia may result in the exclusion from class photos and other activities.

 Regalia Distribution and Collection

  • Regalia will be distributed by the bookstore at the end of April. The bookstore will not release the regalia to you until we have been given the all clear from the law school. If you have not completed all of the items on your graduation check-list the law school will place a hold on your regalia and the bookstore will be unable to release your regalia to you until the school removes the hold.
  • Cap and gown orders will be available for pick up in the Bookstore starting Monday, April 29, 2024 until Friday, May 10, 2024.

Name Cards

Distribution:

  • Name cards are distributed in April and used on the day of Commencement to announce degree candidates as they approach the stage. It is important that students stay in the same order as when they handed in their name card, since this order determines which picture proofs they will receive.
  • Students are responsible for bringing their name cards on the day of Commencement for use during the ceremony. Students who lose or forget their name cards must get a replacement card from Commencement staff on the day of the ceremony.

Name pronunciation:

  • If you suspect your name may be challenging for the Commencement card reader, you are encouraged to clearly write it phonetically on the name card you present on stage.
  • Need help in writing your name out phonetically? Consult https://inogolo.com/.

Schedule

Details will be added as they become available. There is no rehearsal for Commencement. Please note the following times (some are approximate and subject to change):

10:00 a.m. Report to Student Robing at the Peacock Theater.

11:45 a.m. Procession will begin.

2:00 p.m. Ceremony concludes (approximately).

 Line-Up and Procession

  • Only degree candidates will be allowed in the line-up areas. Parents and guests may not assemble with degree candidates but should proceed directly to the seating area.
  • Graduates will be divided by degree for line-up
  • Students should assemble dressed in academic attire and with their name cards in hand to prepare for the procession of candidates.

Seating

  • As you enter the theater seating area, Commencement staff will direct you to your seat. Empty spaces are not allowed, and once in a row, you may not move to another seat.
  • Graduating students who wish to sit together should stand single file behind each other.
  • You should remain standing until the conclusion of the National Anthem.

Special Needs Seating for Graduates

  • If you have a special need that prevents you from using steps or walking the distance between your line-up area and graduate seating, notify the Office of Student Affairs (studentaffairs@lls.edu, 213-736-8151), by Tuesday, April 2, 2024, to make alternate arrangements.

Diploma

  • The degree-awarding process may take about a month after the degree term ends because we review each student's record individually to determine that all degree requirements have been met. For example, in the case of a May degree applicant who has met all requirements, we will be able to award the degree by sometime mid-June. Typically, students can expect to receive the diploma 2-3 weeks after the degree requirements have been cleared by the Office of the Registrar.
  • Your degree will still be conferred when you have completed all requirements to be eligible to graduate. Please check with the Office of the Registrar, as you would have done, to confirm that you have met graduation requirements. Conferral dates are as follows:

    Spring: May 15, 2024

    Summer: July 18, 2024

    Fall: December 18, 2024
