Mission Statement
The Chapter strives to develop programming that supports the mission of Loyola Law School. It focuses on playing an active role in three specific areas: Admissions Recruitment (help recruit Latina/o applicants), Student Retention (provide a system of support and guidance for students) and Alumni Engagement (reconnect and reengage alumni with each other, students and their alma mater).
The Latino Alumni Chapter is an affinity group of Loyola Law School that is committed to service, collaboration and inclusiveness. The Chapter’s leadership includes dedicated alumni who partner with the law school leadership to foster a lifelong connection.
The Chapter supports and actively encourages contributions to the Latino Alumni Scholarship. Proceeds from Chapter-related fundraising activities benefit the Latino Alumni Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to recruit and/or retain Latina/o students.
History
The Loyola Hispanic Alumni Scholarship known today as the Latino Alumni Scholarship was established in 1985 by a group of Loyola Law School alumni committed to increasing the number of Latina/o graduates in the legal profession. These alumni formalized their group by establishing the Loyola Hispanic Alumni Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation was led by a Board of Directors that included: Hon. John L. Martinez '68(chair), Oscar Acosta '80 (vice chair), Ana I. Segura '77, David McKenna '78, Julia Sylva '83, Maria Elena Reyes '84, Michael Guerrero '77 and Daniel Aguilera '82.
The goal of the Foundation was to reduce the financial burden for students by creating a scholarship specifically for Latina/o students. The Foundation raised approximately $80,000, and the law school agreed to match these funds. The Foundation transferred the administration of the scholarship to the law school a few years later.
Today the Latino Alumni Scholarship is a fully endowed scholarship. It has and continues to provide financial support to generations of Latina/o students. The current market value of the Latino Alumni Scholarship is nearly $280,000.
We remain grateful for the vision and the commitment of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Please support the Latino Alumni Scholarship and make your gift in honor of the Foundation’s leadership, vision and commitment to generations of Loyola students.
We also extend our thanks to the alumni who support the Latino Alumni Scholarship. Together we can make a difference.
