Insurance Rep Eyes Evening JD as Tool for Advancement
Each year, insurance companies pour hundreds of millions of dollars into litigation. So it’s no surprise that JD Evening student Kieran Doherty ’19 saw a law degree as a way to advance his career in the insurance industry. Loyola’s Evening Division Program quickly became the obvious choice.
“I was looking to further my career, but didn’t want to take any time off from working while attending law school,” says Doherty. “After doing my research, I found that Loyola’s Evening Program was the best evening program in Los Angeles and one of the top evening programs in the United States.”
A claims representative for Farmers Insurance, Doherty has years of on-the-ground experience managing the issues that come along with claim disputes and other insurance liability issues. Given his job’s demands, Doherty is considering pursuing the Civil Litigation & Advocacy Concentration, which provides a roadmap for relevant coursework with an emphasis in areas like depositions and drafting.
“I am involved in the litigation process through my job,” says Doherty. “This concentration will allow me to further my career goals by providing practical skill training and networking opportunities.”
A total of 11 concentrations are offered in areas such as Corporate Law, Criminal Justice, Cybersecurity & Data Privacy, Entertainment Law, Immigrant Advocacy and Tax Law. All are open to evening students, who may select from a wide range of day and evening class options beyond their core required classes. Evening students generally complete their degrees in four years.
Loyola’s Evening Division Program is the No. 1 part-time law program on the West Coast, according to U.S. News & World Report. As a result, the program is popular among working professionals like Doherty, who saw it as a growth opportunity.
For Doherty, the Evening Division Program has been a means to achieving equilibrium in his work-life balance. “I enjoy the atmosphere on campus,” says Doherty. “Whether it is hanging out in Sonia’s café or the library, everyone is friendly and outgoing.”
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Doherty is no stranger to a busy schedule. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Occidental College while playing on the school’s baseball team. That experience provides him a unique perspective on his current schedule: “School breaks feel strange because I don’t know what to do with myself!”
