Daniel Lemer
Juvenile Innocence & Fair Sentencing Clinic
Even in a graduating class of outstanding clinical students, Daniel Lemer stood out for his writing skills, his advocacy and his compassion for his clients. Starting as a summer extern in 2022, Daniel litigated some of the most complex and high-risk cases for the JIFS Clinic. Here are a few of his achievements: First, he wrote a petition for writ of habeas corpus and a traverse in the California Court of Appeal that resulted in an order to show cause and sent the case back to the trial court, where he is now litigating. Second, Daniel wrote one of the first petitions in the state pursuant to People v. Heard. His client, who was sentenced to 50 years to life in adult court, was certified back to juvenile court. Daniel also wrote and argued two motions under Pitchess v. Superior Court, seeking evidence of L.A. Sheriff deputy gang involvement. Finally, Daniel is currently litigating a federal habeas corpus petition for a long-time JIFS client. Daniel’s diligence, intelligence, compassion and judgment have made him a lifeline for his clients.
