Evening Student Rekindles Dream, Crosses Paths with Niece

Twenty-some years ago, Ray Woo met his wife while both were preparing for the LSAT. They decided he would support her through law school first and pursue his JD at a later date. But life got busy with two kids and growing responsibilities at work, so Woo put his legal aspirations on hold until a looming job relocation spurred him to apply for the evening JD program at Loyola Law School.

"My 20-plus years in the areas of accounting and audit have given me valuable insight into the many enterprise risks facing today's corporations," says Woo '19, who would like to work in the area of corporate law/governance upon graduation.

Significantly,  LLS alumni are well-represented in important legal areas within Toyota Motor North America , where Woo currently serves as an Internal Audit manager.

"With my many interactions with the inā€house attorneys, I have had very good visibility as to how communication, compliance, and legal challenges can influence business decisions," Woo says.

Although an evening student, Woo has crossed paths on several occasions with a daytime student he knows quite well — his niece Lani Fu '18, who is pursuing a joint concentration in tax and corporate law while externing at the IRS office in Los Angeles.

"She's an awesome student and a go-getter," Woo says. "It was a fun conversation within our families with the two of us starting law school at the same time and at the same school."

In fact, Woo and Fu have taken many of the same classes — at different times, of course — and discussed their impressions of the differences. But she draws the line at studying with her uncle.

As for her day student routine, Fu " enjoys the experience that Loyola provides and all of the school events. that allow her to network with other students.
