Ninth Circuit Judge Commencement Speaker for Loyola Law School

LOS ANGELES - The Honorable Pamela Ann Rymer of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit served as commencement speaker at Loyola Law School ceremonies held this past Sunday, May 13 on the Loyola Marymount Unversity campus. Approximately 7,000 people attended ceremonies for the more than 400 juris doctor graduates.

Judge Rymer is an alumna of Vassar College and Stanford Law School. Following law school, she worked as an associate and then partner with Lillick McHose, Wheat, Adams & Charles in Los Angeles. She later founded her own firm, Toy & Rymer. In 1983, Rymer was appointed to the Federal District Court bench in Los Angeles by then President Ronald Reagan, and in 1989 elevated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Among her most significant cases is Apple Computer Inc. v. Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. (1994), in which Apple filed a copyright infringement case and Judge Rymer ruled in favor of Apple's competitors.

In her address, Judge Rymer challenged the graduates to think about whose handprint they will choose to follow. She asked the future attorneys to select a mentor or model in the law, who possesses intellectual, professional and personal integrity; and encouraged the scholars to emulate a real person of real stature, who stands for something that counts and who values justice.

Accredited by the American Bar Association and the Association of American Law Schools, Loyola Law School has the largest enrollment of law students in California and ranks eighth in the nation in trial advocacy. The Law School offers three degrees: the juris doctor (J.D.), a joint J.D./M.B.A. and the LL.M in Taxation. Loyola's bar pass rate for July 2000 was 76 percent.
