EIGHTEENTH ANNUAL RED MASS HONORING THE LEGAL PROFESSION SCHEDULED FOR MAY 4 LOS ANGELES - The St. Thomas More Law Society has scheduled its 18th annual Law Day Red Mass for Thursday evening, May 4, 5:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 1433 W. 9th St., Los Angeles. A reception follows at Loyola Law School, 919 S. Albany St., Los Angeles. People of all faiths working in the field of law and justice are invited to attend. Each year the liturgy and reception grows in numbers and in substance according to Red Mass Co-Chairs Roger M. Sullivan, Esq., partner at the Los Angeles law firm of Sullivan, Workman & Dee, Dean of Loyola Law School Gerald T. McLaughlin, and retired Superior Court Judge Lawrence Waddington. More than 1,000 people attended last year. The name, "Red Mass," derived from the color of the vestments worn by the celebrants of the Mass in the 11th century when the tradition began in France. The robes of the attending royal judges were also bright scarlet, thus providing an additional reason for naming the liturgy the "Red Mass." Celebrated around the world for centuries, the Red Mass has had a rich history and is an event widely attended by judges, lawyers and officials of all faiths for the purpose of invoking God's blessing and guidance in the administration of justice. His Eminence Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop of Los Angeles, will be the principal celebrant of this year's Red Mass. The President of Loyola Marymount University, Rev. Robert Lawton, S.J., will deliver the homily. More than 15 other priests will concelebrate also. There will be a traditional procession of all the celebrants, Papal Knights, judges, professors and administrators from Loyola Law School, members of the Red Mass Advisory Committee, and members of the diplomatic corps. The music will be provided by the Loyola Marymount Consort Singers under the direction of Dr. Mary Breden. Christopher Toth will be the organist and Susan Shepard will serve as cantor. The reception at Loyola Law School will be catered by Camacho's Restaurants. The 2000 St. Thomas More Law Society's Red Mass Advisory Committee members are: Oscar A. Acosta, Suzanne L.
