Job Description Summary:

The Stack Assistant will assist the Stack Supervisor in maintaining the physical integrity and accessibility of all library materials and in tracking the quality of the library environment.  The incumbent is a member of the library’s Public Services section providing integrated services to patrons and will aid the Stack Supervisor in coordinating collection maintenance with the procedures and policies of the library’s Technical Services section.

Education:

Minimum two years’ college or equivalent life experience. 

Experience:

Minimum two years’ experience in a library or equivalent environment.  Law library experience or experience with legal materials highly desirable.

Knowledge/Ability:

Knowledge of library circulation, shelving and cataloging procedures;  ALA and alphanumeric filing systems;  searching techniques for OCLC or other online bibliographic databases.  Basic mathematical and clerical knowledge.

Ability to identify and distinguish similar bibliographic items and records.  Capacity and appreciation for detail.  Work as a member of a team.  Cooperate and maintain collegial relations with all library sections and with library users.  Ability to work under pressure with general supervision and to prioritize tasks.   Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Physical strength and agility necessary to lift, shelve, shift, pack, unpack, and carry up to 40 lbs. of books or other materials, to assemble metal shelves and to move chairs, tables or library equipment.  Dexterity necessary to open, close, file into and assemble various kinds of binders, books, cabinets, shelves etc.

Also the ability to climb and maintain balance on step-stools or step-ladders in order to reach higher levels of shelving while moving or cleaning books.  Work environment may involve exposure to dust, paper fibers, or leather binding fragments.  Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays pursuant to the library’s posted schedule of hours.  Ability to supervise student workers.
