Job Description Summary:
The Reference/Government Publications Librarian will provide quality access to the Library’s collection to all Library users and will assist students, faculty, and attorneys with tools, methods, and strategies necessary for effective legal research. Will have primary responsibility for Federal and California government documents management in all formats; provide effective user access to the Library’s collection of government publications of the U.S. and California and to the library’s extensive collection of nonbook materials; and provide for responsiveness, relevancy and consistency of the government publications and media collections by providing input on their selection, deselection, and processing.
Education:
Master’s degree in library and information studies or equivalent from accredited school.
Experience:
Library reference experience and knowledge of legal bibliography highly desirable.
Knowledge/Ability:
Knowledge: Anglo-American legal system, legal and other reference sources, bibliographic description, library practices and procedures.
Abilities: Work as a member of a team. Set priorities, meet deadlines, work with a minimum of day-to-day supervision. Excellent oral and written communications skills. Demonstrable commitment to providing service to library users. Flexible willingness to adapt to changing needs of the library. Excellent analytical ability. Ability to do complex legal research using bibliographic and computer tools for the faculty and administration on demand. Ability to do one-on-one teaching of students and faculty in use of research tools, computers. Verbal articulateness sufficient to explain and instruct library users regarding: (1) legal and general research methodology; (2) the library’s scheme of organization and layout; (3) library materials and their contents; (4) library policies and procedures. Effective interpersonal skills; ability to meet and deal well with many types of people. Ability to work independently and to coordinate and manage work flow in such a way that both long-term projects and daily responsibilities are accomplished. Proficiency in computer applications for legal research.
