After graduating from Loyola Law School in 1989, Susan Poehls became a litigation associate with the law firm of O'Melveny & Myers in Los Angeles. In 1991, she decided to pursue a lifelong dream of working as a trial lawyer and joined the Los Angeles County Public Defender's office. She later went on to become a felony trial attorney with the Alternate Public Defender's Office. During her career as a criminal defense attorney, Poehls tried over 50 jury trials ranging from misdemeanor thefts to homicide. From 1989-1996, she was also an adjunct professor at Loyola, helping to develop the Law School's Byrne Trial Advocacy Program into one of the top-rated mock trial teams in the nation. After five years of practicing criminal law and the birth of two children, Poehls joined Loyola's full-time teaching staff in 1996.
