After law school, Teri McMurtry-Chubb served as a judicial law clerk for the Fifth Judicial District of Iowa. She then practiced in the areas of insurance defense, employee benefits, ERISA and employment discrimination as a litigation associate for the law firm of Huber, Book, Cortese, Happe & Brown, PLC. McMurtry-Chubb has taught in the areas of law and legal history at the University of Iowa, Des Moines Area Community College, and Cal Poly, Pomona. Prior to joining the Loyola Law faculty, she served as an Assistant Professor of Legal Writing at Drake Law School, and later as an Assistant Professor of Law and Hegemony Studies at Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, Western Washington University. While at Fairhaven, she co-founded the Center for Law, Diversity and Justice and served as its first Director.
