AIPLA Giles Sutherland Rich Intellectual Property Team
The competition has two elements: written briefs and oral argument. The written portion involves the simultaneous preparation of two appellate briefs -- one for the appellant and the other for the appellee. The oral portion involves arguing an appeal with a partner to a panel of three judges. The competition is comprised of four regional meets and a national final meet in Washington, DC.
The conflict generally involves one or more issues of patent law and may also involve trademark, copyright and litigation issues. Teams must prepare both a 30-page appellant's brief and a 30-page appellee's brief. After the briefs are completed, both teams will participate in frequent practice oral arguments before members of the faculty and members of the Patent Bar. Students receive two units for their participation.
