Tax Research Training. 
Professor Kowal will teach tax students advanced tax research strategies in preparation for the fall tax research memorandum assignment.  Students also will receive tax research training on the RIA Checkpoint electronic tax research platform.

Tax Law Society Meeting / Officer Selection and “Landing the Tax Job You Want.  12:00 – 1:00 pm. 
Students will join the Tax Law Society and select officers.  Faculty panelists will discuss tax externships, clinics, and various extracurricular activities, such as the ABA Tax Section’s Law Student Tax Challenge. This event will be sponsored by the Tax Law Society.

Students will join Program alumni and faculty for brunch in one of the year’s most enjoyable events.  Students will also meet their alumni mentors.

“Writing a Scholarly Tax Article.”  12:00 – 1:00 pm, Bannan Room. 
Tax faculty will discuss how to choose and research a topic, the writing process, and the benefits of writing a tax article, including entry in the Tannenwald writing competition.

October 7, 2014

Careers in Tax Practice. 12:00 - 1:00 pm, B220
Panelists will discuss various types of tax specialty practices, including business tax, international tax, and state and local tax, as well as different tax practice environments, including large and small law firm practice, public accounting firm practice, and government practice. 

October 21, 2014

Elder Law and Estate Planning with High Exemptions.  5:00 - 6:00 pm, C403
Panelists will discuss how estate planning practice has changed in the current high exemption environment, including the importance of tax basis planning and elder law considerations involving end of life care and government benefits. 

October 27, 2014

Resume Submission Deadline.  5:00 pm. 
Students wishing to include their resumes in the fall Graduate Tax student resume book to be distributed to potential employers must submit it via the TWEN drop box.

November 5, 2014

Tax Court Trial in LA and Visit by Judge Marvel.   5:00 – 6:00 pm, C’90. 
US Tax Court Judge Paige Marvel will visit Loyola to speak to students and faculty about the Tax Court, clerkships at the Court, and noteworthy recent decisions.  Loyola tax students are also invited to observe a Tax Court trial at the federal courthouse in downtown LA.      

November 6-8, 2014

California State Bar Tax Section Annual Meeting and Tax Policy Conference. 
Loyola students are invited to attend this meeting, including substantive educational sessions and networking events, in San Diego, CA.
