Semester-in-Practice Externship
This externship program was developed as a capstone experience for those intending to practice in the civil litigation context. Students are placed in some of the top trial practice firms in the city of Los Angeles.
The benefits of the opportunity are multifold, but highlights may include: an assigned mentor in the firm and attendance at depositions, client meetings and court appearances. This is in addition to the invaluable networking opportunities inherent in placement at top firms. Because of the limited number of placements available, the process is competitive and takes into account your experience, academic record and expressed interest in civil litigation.
Submit Semester in Practice Externship Application for Fall 2013/Spring 2014
Please note the following before submitting your application:
- This externship has priority for 3L and 4E students. However, 2Ls and 3Es in the Civil Litigation and Advocacy Concentration and who are enrolled in the Civil Litigation Skills Practicum will be considered.
- Students will be required to attend a mandatory class on Ethics, Professional and Course Requirements for off-campus externs, and a mandatory orientation for the Semester in Practice externship.
- Students generally extern for one to two days each week for 4-8 hours. Most firms want students to be available two mornings each week, although one full day can also be arranged.
- Efforts are made to pair students with firms based on their expressed interests. Students will not be allowed to select the firm at which they are placed.
