Case of Sandra Milena Vélez Caro against the Directorate of Refugees and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Integration of Ecuador.
We filed an amicus curiae brief in this case pending before the "Primera Sala de lo Civil, Mercantil, Inquilinato y Materias Residuales de la Corte Provincial de Pichincha" of Ecuador.
The brief can be found here: International Human Rights Clinic Case 4 Brief 1
Our brief, in support of plaintiff (represented by Asylum Access Ecuador), aimed to show how Colombia repeatedly and systematically fails to provide access to justice for victims of sexual violence. It also showed how failure to provide access to justice for victims of sexual violence is unfortunately a very common phenomenon, beyond Colombia. To prepare our brief, we relied on a wide range of reputable international sources, producing one of the most detailed and comprehensive studies on the matter to date.
The same brief was filed, mutatis mutandis, in support of a second case, by another Colombian refugee - Mariela Cabrera - before another court in Ecuador. The brief can be found here: International Human Rights Clinic Case 4 Brief 2
