Consumer-Debt Options Counseling Project
This project's goal is to inform consumer debtors so they are better able to manage their finances in general and their consumer-debts in particular. The goal is for the consumer to make an informed decision about how to proceed, rather than ignore, their debt conflict, and when appropriate to utilize the mediation services of The Center. The vast majority of these actions go unanswered because consumers can't find legal help, don't understand their rights, fear creditors, and don't know how to navigate the court system alone. Consumers get informed by participating in the C-DOC Debtors' Workshop. Debtors can participate in individual counseling sessions after the Workshop. Students work under the supervision of attorneys throughout the semester to provide Consumer-Debt Options Counseling, after receiving training in substantive areas of the law and options counseling.
