A cancer diagnosis can carry with it a variety of potential legal issues, including insurance coverage, employment discrimination, access to health care, child custody, and estate planning. These legal issues can cause people unnecessary worry, confusion, stress, and can be overwhelming. When these legal issues are not addressed, people may find themselves surviving the disease, only to find that they have lost their homes, jobs, insurance, or families.
The Cancer Legal Resource Center provides free and confidential information and resources on cancer-related legal issues to people with cancer, their families, friends, employers, health care professionals, and others coping with cancer. The Center, a joint program of Loyola Law School and the Disability Rights Legal Center (formerly Western Law Center for Disability Rights), has a national toll free Telephone Assistance Line (866-THE-CLRC) where callers can receive information about relevant laws and resources for their particular situation. The Center provides trainings for support groups, survivors, caregivers, health care professionals, hospitals, cancer organizations, and other community groups.
The Center's callers receive information about its services, and, when necessary, are matched with volunteer attorneys and other professionals for additional legal information. The Center trains law students, who work on the Telephone Assistance Line, to appreciate and understand the legal needs of people battling cancer and cancer survivors.
The CLRC is celebrating its 10th anniversary! Since its founding in 1997, the CLRC has served over 70,000 people through its Telephone Assistance Line, conferences,
seminars, workshops, outreach programs, and other community activities. The CLRC is planning a slate of events to celebrate its 10th Anniversary, including a Casino Royale
on August 4, 2007, a golf tournament on September 30, 2007, and the CLRC Cancer Rights Conference in 2008. Learn more about CLRC accomplishments.
The Center is directed by Joanna Morales, who is a graduate of Loyola Law School and has worked at the Cancer Legal Resource Center for four years.
